WHAT IS CARICOM?

The Caribbean Community, commonly known as CARICOM, is a regional organization comprising 15 Member States and 5 Associate Members. With a population of approximately 16 million, 60% of whom are under the age of 30, CARICOM represents a vibrant and youthful region rich in ethnic diversity, languages, and cultures. It spans both island nations and mainland territories, from The Bahamas in the north to Guyana and Suriname in South America.
Note: InvestCARICOM operates within the CARICOM region, facilitating investment opportunities and providing insights into the real estate markets of member states. We are an independent advisory firm and are not affiliated with the official Caribbean Community (CARICOM) organization.

Why CARICOM Matters for Investors

CARICOM plays a pivotal role in promoting regional economic integration, fostering trade, and providing a stable environment for investment. It has built a framework that supports sustainable development and enhances foreign investment opportunities. At InvestCARICOM, we leverage our deep local knowledge and network to guide investors in capitalizing on the growing markets within CARICOM member states.

Who We Are

CARICOM is a multilingual and multicultural community, with English as the predominant language, alongside French, Dutch, and various Creole languages. The diverse population includes people of African, Indian, Indigenous, European, Chinese, Portuguese, and Javanese descent. This cultural richness is part of what makes CARICOM such a dynamic and appealing region for investors and entrepreneurs alike.

History and Evolution

CARICOM’s path toward regional integration began with the formation of the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) in 1965, which set the stage for deeper economic collaboration. The signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas in 1973 by Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago formally established CARICOM. Over time, the organization has grown to include a wider range of members, and in 2002, it revised the treaty to create the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), facilitating the free movement of goods, services, and people across member states.

Four Pillars of CARICOM

CARICOM’s objectives are built on four fundamental pillars.
1. Economic Integration

Promotes economic convergence, enhances international competitiveness, and increases intra-regional trade, creating a more stable environment for investment.

2. Foreign Policy Coordination

Unites member states in foreign relations, providing a stronger collective voice on the global stage, which benefits trade and economic diplomacy.

Achievements and Impact

CARICOM is the longest-standing regional integration movement in the developing world, and it has made significant contributions to the region’s economic and social development:
